Re-Written: Writer's Workshop in the Philippines

THE CROSS

I am the Cross, not any cross, but the Cross.
To the Romans, I was a symbol of
curse, punishment, crime and death,
To the Believer, I am a symbol
of blessing, accomplishment, reward and life.
For pagans, I am nothing
but meaningless wooden pieces.
For the saved, I am a symbol
of faith and their Everything.
God uses me to remind people
of His Son Jesus Christ
Who has the power to save and transform lives.
Once I was used to connote negative meanings,
But Christ has made a difference in me.

—Joel Detalo, Jr.

“I can’t believe it,” the workshop participant exclaimed, “one minute, we were talking about puffed veins on top of ugly feet, then smooth, beautiful feet. We read a Bible verse about feet which bring good news, then all at once we were writing poetry about good news!”

The poem “The Cross” above is a sample of an assignment com-pleted for the Re-Written Workshop held at Asia Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary (APNTS) on July 24 - 26, 2008.

World Mission Communications and World Mission Literature, Asia-Pacific partnered with Fairbanks International School of Communications and the Books for Pastors project to present specialized courses in journalism, creative writing (poetry and devotional exercises), scriptwriting for radio and video, and design.

Regional literature assistant Grace Tia was instrumental in the overall organization of the workshop. Philippine literature coordinator Violly Lartec supported the workshop and brought 5 students from Luzon Nazarene Bible College in Baguio. Guest presenter and volunteer Angie Riesterer from the US joined local presenters Daniel Pape, Pinky Mayshle, Jay Mijares, and Rafael Santos in challenging participants to write. Languages represented by participants in the workshop included Cebuano, English, Ilocono, Ilonggo, Tagalog, and Waray-waray. Each person received a Books for Pastors text, and all were challenged to write theology and discipleship books in the Filipino context and in their heart language.

Our commissioning service emphasized the charge, “Go into all the world and witness for Christ with your pen. Write and rewrite until your own life and words have been Rewritten by Him.”
